Historians and sociologists of science often = remark that=20 scientific knowledge grows not only, or even primarily, through = the=20 sustained accumulation of observations built into preexisting = theories,=20 but through leaps from one fundamental theoretical conception to = another.=20 Such paradigm-shifts, termed scientific revolutions, occur = periodically in=20 the course of science's development.

In the period from the seventeenth to the = nineteenth=20 century science was in rapid yet relatively linear evolution. It = built on=20 the paradigm provided by Galileo, Kepler, and Newton and, = emancipating=20 itself from religion gained a dominant position in the Western = world. The=20 twentieth century witnessed a number of revolutions, first in = physics, and=20 subsequently also in biology, cosmology, and consciousness = research.=20 Science's impact in society grew, mainly through physics-based=20 breakthroughs in transportation, production, = information-processing, and=20 communication. However, toward the end of this period researchers = in=20 fundamental physics, cosmology, biology, and consciousness studies = encountered deepening anomalies. Now another leap is about to=20 occur=97another scientific revolution.

The outcome of the coming revolution is = variously=20 assessed. A number of observers believe that, given current = advances in=20 genetics and the spread of an organic approach to natural as well = as human=20 ecology, the twenty-first century will be a century of biology. = This view=20 has much to recommend it, but it does not grasp the full range of = the=20 anomalies that drive the current development. In the opening years = of the=20 twenty-first century the evolution of science is driven by the = discovery=20 of space- and time-invariant coherence not only in quantum = physics, but=20 also in biology, cosmology, and consciousness research. Quantum = physics=20 gives a sophisticated mathematical account of quantum coherence = (although=20 it fails to give a realistic explanation of it), but in most other = fields=20 the analogous forms of coherence are mainly anomalous. Space- and=20 time-invariant coherence in the diverse domains of investigation = conflicts=20 with the paradigm of local action and localized causality that = dominates=20 the biological and human sciences.

The finding of enduring, instantaneous coherence = in=20 phenomena is not just a paradox; it is also a spur for = theory-innovation.=20 As a quasi-universal phenomenon it requires a new conceptual = framework,=20 one that can exhibit the unity of the main branches of the = empirical=20 sciences including physics, cosmology, biology, and the = transpersonal and=20 quantum brain=97theoretical schools of consciousness research. =

Coherence, of course, is not the only factor = arguing for=20 the unity of the physical, the biological, and the psychological = sciences.=20 Despite important differences at the level of observation, on = deeper=20 analysis significant continuities are coming to light among the = phenomena=20 investigated in these sciences. Evolution in the universe and = evolution on=20 Earth, though phenomenologically different, prove to be continuous = and in=20 some respects mutually consistent. There is, for example, a = continuous and=20 consistent buildup of free energy density in physical and = biological=20 systems. Eric Chaisson has shown that F m , the value of free = energy rate=20 density (the unit of energy per time per mass, erg S -1 g -1 ) = increases=20 throughout the range of physical and biological evolution. For = stars the=20 average value of F m is 2; for planets such as the Earth it is 75; = for=20 plants in the biosphere it is 900; and in the human body it is = 20,000 (=20 Chaisson 2000).

Beyond free energy density a wide variety of=20 physical-biological invariances have been investigated by such=20 =93transdisciplinary disciplines=94 as cybernetics, information = theory, and=20 general systems and general evolution theory (Laszlo 1987). = Building on=20 these continuities and invariances, science is currently growing = beyond=20 physics and beyond biology, into the dimension of = transdisciplinary=20 theory.

The rise of an integral science of truly = transdisciplinary=20 scope is radically new, it constitutes another scientific = revolution. The=20 hitherto advanced unified and grand-unified theories, and the = string and=20 the related =93theories of everything=94 are mono-disciplinary: = they are=20 unified theories of physics, at best theories of every=20 physical thing. By contrast the integral science now on = the=20 horizon promises to be a science of physical as well as of = biological, and=20 even of psychological =93things.=94 It will embrace quantum = physics and=20 quantum biology, as well as quantum cosmology and quantum brain = and=20 consciousness research. It will be a transdisciplinary field of = research=20 and experimentation applying concepts developed in the microscopic = domain=20 across the full range of observed phenomena.

BASIC CONCEPTS=97Two concepts will function as = root=20 metaphors of the integral quantum science of the twenty-first = century:=20 fields and information.

The sustained investigation of the cosmic plenum = as the=20 basis of the entire realm of manifest phenomena, including mass, = energy,=20 and information, will highlight the role of fields not only in = physics and=20 cosmology, but throughout the range of observed phenomena, = including the=20 phenomenon of mind. The reinterpretation of general relativity's = geometric=20 space-time as the locus of a universal field that not only gives = rise to=20 matter-energy entities and systems, but also links them and = conserves=20 their traces, will shed light on the phenomenon of anomalous = coherence and=20 will build it into the scientific world picture. A sound = hypothesis of=20 connectivity will lay the foundation for a science that is more = inclusive,=20 and penetrates deeper into the realms of reality than the = mainstream=20 sciences of the twentieth century. The integral quantum science of = the=20 twenty-first century will offer a realistic mapping of the = pertinent=20 facts, regardless of whether they pertain to the physical aspect = of=20 reality, or to its biological or psychological aspect.

Information will be the second root concept of = integral=20 quantum science. Information is not only the dominant reality of=20 technological civilization; it is also emerging as a basic feature = of the=20 investigation of nature. According to Roy Frieden, it is the = foundation of=20 the laws of physics (Frieden 2001). His work demonstrates that the = laws=20 that govern the physical world are derivable from the amount of=20 information present in observed phenomena. Frieden points out that = the=20 much vaunted equations of quantum physics, considered the most = basic laws=20 of the known world, derive their legitimacy from the fact that = they work:=20 they have been tested over and over again, with a number of = predictions=20 confirmed up to ten places of decimals. However, today's quantum = theories=20 do not disclose why the laws take the form they do. Frieden finds = that the=20 form of the laws can be derived by applying I, so-called = Fisher=20 information (the formula for determining how much information one = can=20 obtain from a physical system) to J, the amount of = information=20 bound up in the system being measured. Both I and J = can=20 be calculated for a wide range of phenomena. To derive a law of = physics=20 (more exactly, the Lagrangian that defines that law) we need to = define the=20 precise location of the system in space and time and subtract = J=20 from I. This leads to the appropriate Lagrangian , = and when=20 it is made as small as possible, the pertinent law of physics = emerges.=20 Information, Frieden maintains, is what physics is all about.

Information is what all empirical science, and = not just=20 physics, is all about, yet the origins and status of the = information=20 discovered in nature remain to be clarified. Following Wheeler's=20 suggestion, that observer participancy gives rise to information, = and=20 information gives rise to physics, Frieden speculates that the = quantity of=20 information inherent in a system under observation is created in = the act=20 of observation. However, information may also be objectively = present in=20 nature. If so, the act of observation does not create the = information we find, but merely elicits it.

Integral quantum science will recognize that = information=20 not only defines the form taken by the laws of nature, but also is = a=20 physical factor that connects phenomena and informs their = behavior.=20 Information in this sense is =93in-formation=94: the nonenergetic = =93formation=94=20 of the recipient by the message.

In the 1950's David Bohm's hidden variable = theory=20 contained an explicit=97if still classical=97concept of = in-formation: the=20 =93quantum potential.=94 A complex factor that reflects the entire = context of=20 quantum measurements, the quantum potential guides the path of the = electron and allows a causal interpretation of quantum phenomena. = Though a=20 classical factor, the quantum potential was said to act by form = alone, and=20 hence it anticipated the notion of physically active in-formation. = The=20 latter Bohm developed in the late 1980's in his =93ontological=20 interpretation of quantum theory.=94 Here quantum processes=97the = processes by=20 which a determinate physical outcome emerges out of a multiplicity = of=20 potentialities=97are accounted for in reference to a holograph = field that=20 produces active in-formation (Bohm 1980, Bohm & Hiley 1993). =

This concept had precedents throughout the = twentieth=20 century. Einstein's own concept of the F=FChrungsfeld (guidance = field),=20 mentioned by him in the 1920's, was basically a nonenergetically=20 in-forming field, governing the motion of particles in space-time. = Although Einstein came close to incorporating this concept in his=20 subsequent unified field theory, he did not develop it in = theoretical=20 form. In general relativity he opted instead for the geometry of = spacetime=20 to guide the motion of particles=97possibly because too little was = known at=20 the time about the quantum vacuum to permit the assumption that it = would=20 constitute a physical field capable of affecting the behavior of = charged=20 particles. Einstein did, however, note that the concept of a = =93physically=20 real ether=94 must be reintroduced into the worldview of physics, = and his=20 insight is now gaining validity. Bold new theories interpret the = equations=20 of general relativity as equations of motion in a physically real=20 universal substratum=97the =93physical ether=94=97instead of as = equations that=20 define the formal geometry of space-time.

Although Bohm did not generalize the concept of=20 nonenergetic in-formation beyond physics, it is now evident that=20 physically effective yet nonvectorially propagating in-formation = is not=20 limited to the quantum world. Evidence reviewed in this study = shows that=20 it is a factor in the evolution of the living world, of the world = of=20 consciousness, and of the universe as a whole.

Presently Harold Puthoff, Roger Penrose, Glenn = Rein, A. E.=20 Akimov , Fritz-Albert Popp, L=E1szl=F3 Gazdag , Hans Primas , = Marco Bischof ,=20 and other front-line investigators follow up Bohm's and Einstein's = insight=20 and explore the fundamental role of fields and in-formation in a = wide=20 range of phenomena of scientific interest. Puthoff articulated the = basic=20 insight and the challenge it poses to science: =93=85 a dynamic = equilibrium=20 exists between the ever-agitated motion of matter on the quantum = level and=20 the surrounding zero-point energy field =85 Who is to say whether = =85=20 modulation of such fields might not carry meaningful = information?=94 If this=20 research comes to full fruition, he added, =93what would emerge = would be an=20 increased understanding that all of us are immersed, both as = living and=20 physical beings, in an overall interpenetrating and interdependent = field=20 in ecological balance with the cosmos as a whole, and that even = the=20 boundary lines between the physical and =93metaphysical=94 would = dissolve into=20 a unitary viewpoint of the universe as a fluid, changing,=20 energetic/informational cosmological unity=94 (Puthoff 2001).

Built on the foundation of a fully developed and = consistently tested hypothesis of connectivity, integral quantum = science=20 will penetrate deeper into the domains of reality than the = physical,=20 biological and psychological sciences of the twentieth = century=97below the=20 level of the quanta that populate space-time, to the cosmic plenum = that=20 generates the quanta and interconnects the particles and systems = built of=20 them. It will also penetrate wider into the cosmos=97beyond the = spatial and=20 temporal boundaries of this universe, to the metaverse that gave = birth to=20 this universe and set its parameters. These extensions of the = penetration=20 of science will not be arbitrary, or even surprising: they are the = logical=20 continuation of the series of conceptual breakthroughs that = extended=20 scientific inquiry from the sphere of immediate observation to the = wider=20 and deeper domains of instrumental observation, carried ever = further by=20 conceptual analysis and mathematical extrapolation.

In the seventeenth century Newton's classical = mechanics=20 gave us the mechanistic universe, with independent mass points = externally=20 connected by deterministic causal relations. In the twentieth = century=20 Einstein's general relativity gave us the relativistically = interlinked=20 universe, where all things are connected by signals propagating = across the=20 geometric structure of space-time. In the twenty-first century = integral=20 quantum science will give us the coherent universe, where all = things are=20 intrinsically connected by subtle yet effective in-formation = conveyed by a=20 fundamental virtual-energy field at the heart of a possibly = infinite=20 metaverse.
